Egypt- Edraak Foundation for Development and Equality and its Observatory on Gender-Based Violence crimes Against Women and Girls has issued a report called, “Violence crimes against women and girls in Egypt.” 60 women were killed, 10 women escaped from being killed, 140 women were subjected to violence in the first three months of 2021, says the report.
17 women were raped
The report says that many women were driven to attempt suicide, “In the first three months of 2021, 20 women were driven to attempt suicide. The violence led to the permanent disability of six women. 17 women were raped and 14 women were sexually abused. Two women faced female genital mutilation in Egypt.”
The perpetrators were those closest to women
Women were beaten or killed by their partner, father, or brother, says the report. “In Article 242, the Egyptian legislator has regulated the punishment for beating that results in severe injury or temporary or permanent disability, the punishment in this case range from one year to 10 years imprisonment. But most of the perpetrators do not receive any punishment.”
Rate of violence in urban areas is higher
According to the report, 15.7 percent of women and girls aged between 19 and 30 were subjected to gender-based violence. 72% of violent crimes against women and girls occurred in urban areas, 27% of violent crimes occurred in rural areas.
