Tunisia- The Minister of Women, Family, Children, and Seniors (MFFES) has issued a statement on violence against women between January and October 2021. 6,284 women called for help on the hotline for domestic violence (Le numéro vert 1899), 75.5% women reported that they were subjected to domestic violence, according to the statement
The statement reveals that 82% of women were subjected to verbal and psychological violence, 66% women were subjected to physical violence, 39 percent of women were subjected to economic violence and 10% of women reported that they were subjected to sexual violence. In the statement, the ministry underlined that women cannot report the sexual violence faced by them due to the patriarchal mentality in society.
Green hotline is free
The ministry also stated that the green hotline for domestic violence (Le numéro vert 1899) is one of the national monitoring mechanisms for combating violence against women and that the emergency number 1899 annually receives 15,000 calls. Le numéro vert 1899 is a free hotline for children and women in Tunisia.
