Call from mother of murdered Gülcan: All I want is justice

The investigation into the murder of Gülcan Atar, who was killed by Sezer Gezer last year in December, has been completed. “All I want is justice,” said her mother Vetha Atar, calling for solidarity from women’s organizations.

 Amed (Diyarbakır) - 20-year-old Gülcan Atar, who lived in the Gürdoğan neighborhood of Amed’s Yenişehir district, was shot dead by Sezer Gezer on December 3, 2022. Seriously injured Gülcan Atar died after struggling for her life for 10 days at the hospital. Sezer Gezer claimed that he did not kill Gülcan Atar but she was shot dead by a man named M.Ş.D. After Gülcan’s mother Vetha Atar and a witness R.D. said that Gülcan Atar had been killed by Sezer Gezer, he was arrested one and a half months after the incident.

When Gülcan Atar was struggling for her life at the hospital, M.Ş.D was accused of injuring Gülcan and detained. In a short time, it was revealed that Sezer Gezer and his mother Şükran Gezer, who accused M.Ş.D. of injuring Gülcan, were lying. Police found out that M.Ş.D was another place when Gülcan Atar was shot dead. Then, a witness named R.D. said that Sezer Gezer had shot Gülcan Atar.

Common defense from the perpetrator: ‘It was an accident’

At the hospital, Gülcan Atar told her mother that she was shot by Sezer Gezer and his mother. “They wanted to kill me,” she told her mother. On January 14, Sezer Gezer and his mother were detained. In his defense, Sezer Gezer said, “It was an accident.” On January 15, he was sent to prison. His mother Şükran Gezer was also sent to prison.

Confidentiality order issued on the investigation

The Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office prepared an indictment and the indictment was accepted by the Diyarbakır 7th High Criminal Court. Sezer Gezer is accused of “murder in the first degree, deprivation of liberty and possessing an unregistered firearm” while his mother Şükran Gezer is accused of “murder in the first degree”.

‘All I want is justice’

The first hearing of the murder case will be held on December 12, 2023. Gülcan Atar’s mother Vetha Atar calls for solidarity from women’s organizations. “My daughter was killed. Her last words were ‘they did this to me.’ The man (Sezer Gezer) was not arrested for days. All I want is justice. I want those who killed my daughter not to go unpunished. I expect solidarity from women,” said Vetha Atar, calling on women not to leave her alone at the hearing.
