115 Ebola Deaths in Congo and Fears of Rapid Virus Outbreak
Local DR Congo authorities report Ebola death toll has risen to 115, with international warnings over difficulty controlling the rapid outbreak, especially after new cases and deaths in neighbouring Uganda.
News Centre -Ebola virus is an extremely dangerous disease transmitted through direct contact and the bodily fluids of infected people. The current outbreak is difficult to contain due to the absence of an effective vaccine or treatment for the Bundibugyo strain, which increases the challenges of controlling the spread of the infection.
Local authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo announced yesterday, Wednesday, June 10, that the confirmed death toll from the recent Ebola outbreak had risen to 115 fatalities.
The Ministry of Information stated in a communiqué that the total number of confirmed infections had reached 598 cases since the disease began spreading in the east of the country last April.
The Director‑General of the World Health Organization had earlier warned that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo remains out of control, especially after 19 additional infections and two deaths have been confirmed so far in neighbouring Uganda, which has also been affected by the disease.
The WHO had classified this outbreak, immediately after it was announced, as a "Public Health Emergency of International Concern," requiring urgent global response and coordination.
