97 women win seats in Iraq’s parliament

News Center- Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has begun to announce the official results of Iraq's early parliamentary elections held on October 10.  97 women won seats in Iraq’s parliament, according to the commission. The Empowering Women Office at the General Secretariat for the Council of Ministers has released a statement and announced that 97 women won seats in Iraq’s parliament. The statement by the General Secretariat said, “The success of women is a natural result of the efforts of those women who showed courage and determination to participate actively, and their experience today is a victory for Iraqi women and a source of pride for all.”

24 female parliamentarians from Kurdistan Region

24 out of 97 female parliamentarians were elected from Federal Kurdistan Region. 10 out of 30 parliamentarians of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) are women; nine out of 15 parliamentarians of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), five of nine parliamentarians of the New Generation Movement.

Some names of new female parliamentarians in Iraq’s parliament are as follows;

KDP’s women parliamentarians from Erbil: Cuwan Abdullah, Nehle Kadır, and Leyla Ekrem Said.

New Generation Movement’s women parliamentarians from Erbil: Wezire Ahmed, Viyan Abdulaziz, and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s candidate Kurdo Ömer.

PUK’s women parliamentarians from Sulaymaniyah: Nermin Maruf, Çıro Hama Şerif, Bedriye Hüseyin Aziz and Sırwa Muhammed Reşid.

New Generation Movement’s women parliamentarians from Sulaymaniyah: Bedriye İbrahim Reşid, Ariyan Aziz Ahmet, and Sırwa Abdulwahid.

Women parliamentarians from Duhok: Evin Selim, Zozan Ali, İman Abdulrezak, and Viyan Sabri

Women parliamentarians from Mosul: KDP’s candidates Kavin Sait Muhammet and Viyan Dexil. PUK’s candidates Ehlam İhsan Ramazan and Ronze Ziyad.

PUK’s candidate Dilan Gaffur and KDP’s candidate Necva Hamit Kakeyi won seats in the parliament from Kirkuk.

PUK’s candidate Sozan Hüseyin Mansur won a seat in the parliament from Diyala Governorate.

Independent Kurdish candidate Naske Mehdi Garib won a seat in the parliament from Saladin Governorate.
