News Center- The water level of Lake Urmia in Iran has been decreasing due to drought. According to the report released by the Urmia Disaster Operations Administration, 95% of Lake Urmia has dried up. According to the experts, drying up of the lake will not only affect the environment but also may pose a security risk. The experts say that there are 30 billion tons of salt in the lake and that if the lake totally dries up, it would cause salt rains and salt rains would affect the region. “Cities close to the lake, such as Tawas, may be evacuated as a result of salt rains. The project to evacuate this city would cost a trillion dollars,” they say.

Although experts warned the government to take measures to prevent the drying up of the lake in the 1990s, no step has been taken until now.  Experts say that if the lake completely dries up, it would cause salt storms or salt rains, affect the agriculture and living areas and neighboring countries such as Iraq, Turkey and Azerbaijan.
