Jordan - Journalist, radio, and television presenter Dama Al-Kurdi thinks women working in the media in Jordan are able to overcome the challenges and social pressure faced them. Stating that Jordanian women journalists face fewer challenges compared to countries suffering from war and conflicts, she said that Jordanian women journalists can prove their presence in the media.

Women journalists should be supported

Indicating that Jordanian women journalists work in safer areas compared to other women journalists working in the countries suffering from ongoing armed conflicts and war,  Dama Al-Kurdi said that the number of women journalists is less than men journalists. Dama Al-Kurdi called on media organizations to mark the World Press Freedom Day (May 3) and asked them to support women journalists and empower their participation in top-tier positions.

Speaking about the discrimination faced by women journalists, she said that working late hours every day or traveling abroad causes discrimination against women working in the media.

She pursued her dreams

Dama Al-Kurdi’s book titled “The Women Who Beat Cancer,” tells her story of beating breast cancer. She wrote the book to give cancer patients hope and encourage women to screen for early detection of breast cancer, in addition to attending regular check-ups. “My book was published by the Dar Al-Ahram Publishing House. The book is available in all bookshops now. I want to get my book out in Kurdish.”

Dama Al-Kurdi carries out awareness-raising activities for women’s rights and breast cancer. She was awarded two consecutive years for her efforts to raise public awareness of the signs and symptoms of early breast cancer.
