Yemen- People of Yemen have suffered from poverty due to the collapse of the currency in the country. The economic crisis sparks protests in many cities. The United Nations (UN) warned on Sunday (October 3) that the continued depreciation of the local currency is exacerbating the hunger crisis in Yemen and double the prices of food commodities. Aden Women’s Gathering, a group of women consists of academics, activists, journalists, and very well figures, held a protest on October 5. The Yemini women spoke to NuJINHA about their protest.

“50 dollars are not enough for a normal life”

Yusra Mihemed, one of the protesters, told us the economic collapse had serious negative effects on people. “I am a teacher and my salary is equal to 150 Saudi riyals, equal to 50 dollars. 50 dollars are not enough to maintain a normal life. The collapse of the country's economy causes many families to suffer from poverty. Students are suffering from hunger. They spend their time in schools because they don’t have money to buy anything.”

“Families cannot buy school uniforms for their children”

Yusra Mihemed emphasized that the families in Yemen fail to make ends meet. “Many children come to school without their school uniform because their families cannot buy school uniform. The financial problems faced by families also affect education. If education wasn’t free, students would have to leave school.

Call on the relevant authorities

Appealing to the relevant authorities, Yusra Mihemed demanded the authorities find a solution to the economic problems faced by people. “All parties should stop accusing each other. They should work together because the people of Aden don’t deserve these. The Yemeni people have difficulties meeting their needs of food, medicines, and other needs. The relevant authorities should receive help from experts in the economy.”

“We live under tragic conditions”

Stating that they live under tragic conditions, teacher Yasmine Baghraib said, “The mounting economic hardship makes our lives harder. It causes the increase in the unemployment rate and crime rate and the collapse of the health system.”
