Hasekê -Til Nesrî or Walto village in Syriac (Assyrian) language is one of the Syriac villages on the banks of the Habur River located in the Til Temir district of NE Syria. Syriac people think Til Nesrî is one of the most beautiful Syriac villages. Before the attacks of ISIS, the village was famous for its pine trees, tea, and all kinds of fruits and vegetables, all these natural products were sent to many cities from the village. People used to visit the village to see its beauties or to take a breather.

From Hakkari to Habur

The history of Til Nesrî dates back to 1935. Syriac people began to live in the village, emigrated there from the Hakkari region in the south of Turkey, and built several houses there at that time. But ISIS attacked the village and destroyed everything that symbolized Syriac people. Before the attacks of ISIS, the people of the village represented their village in national competitions in many sports branches such as cycling, swimming, and long jump; Ishtar Odisho is only one of them.

Maryam El Azra Church and Til Nesrî

Many historical buildings in the village were destroyed by ISIS. Maryam El Azra Church is one of them. The church, built in 1934, is one of the oldest churches in Syria. The church was restored and reopened in 2005. Before ISIS attack on the village, the population of the village was about 7.000, and 20% of the population was Syriac people. The village was known as the capital of the Syriac people in Syria. But today, only 900 Syriac people live in the village. Maryam El Azra church was destroyed by ISIS but the Syriac people living in the village try to protect it despite everything.
