EBÎR MUHEMED

Qamishlo (Qamishli)- In an interview with NuJINHA, Sema Begdaş, Spokesperson of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) commented on the recent developments in Syria, the collapse of the Bashar Assad’s regime, the attacks started by the Turkish state and Turkish-backed armed groups on November 27, the massacres being committed in northeastern Syria and steps to be taken for a new Syria.

The whole world follows the recent developments in Syria, said Sema Begdaş, “A new process started in Syria following the attacks on Aleppo on November 27. The attacks launched by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (Al-Nusra) is not only a plan initiated by these armed groups but an international plan to change Syria. You know, the Middle East has been witnessing a new wave of change and transformation. Syria is also a part of the Middle East and affected by this process because the Bashar Assad regime has collapsed.”

‘Russia and Iran kept the regime in power’

Russia and Iran can no longer protect Assad's regime due to their own interests, indicated Sema Begdaş. “The whole world wonders what will happen in Syria after the fall of the regime. The main supporters of this regime were Iran and Russia. The war in Ukraine also paved the way for the fall of Assad's regime. Russia and Iran kept the regime in power in the last 13 years.”

‘Everyone knows the roots of this armed group’

Sema Begdaş pointed to the bloody past of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and said: “There are many comments about why this armed group is used in Syria. There are efforts to improve the image of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham. HTS claims that they have no problems with the people of Syria; however, everyone knows the roots of this armed group. What happened in Iraq, Syria and Shengal (Sinjar) and the reality of this armed group are obvious.”

‘The regime missed the opportunities for building a democratic Syria’

The political and diplomatic efforts have now begun to move Syria into a transition process in accordance with the UN Security Council Resolution 2254, Sema Begdaş told NuJINHA. “There are efforts but how these efforts will be concluded is unknown. Yes, the regime has fallen but we cannot say that security will be built immediately. We have been expelling the regime out of North and East Syria for a long time. The people of the region, of course, felt happy for the fall of the regime because they had been oppressed by the regime for so many years. The regime missed the opportunities for building a democratic Syria in the last 13 years.”

Call on the people of Syria to unite

Sema Begdaş called on all people of Syria, particularly the people of North and East Syria to “unite against the attacks” and concluded her speech as follows: “Together, we can put our signature under important successes to build an equal life in Syria. We have to protect our gains and we must be aware of plans against us. The people of the region should allow their region to be occupied. Since the start of the revolution in Rojava, we, as the PYD, have been ready for dialogue to build a democratic Syria and we are ready now as well. We have 12 years of experience and believe that the future of Syria must be determined by the people of Syria. Along with the guarantor states, we can build a democratic country for all people of Syria. The new process creates hope that a new democratic system will be established in Syria.”
